Insights From Three Months of Marriage

Marian and I got married three months ago.

It was a beautiful day. The sun filtered everyone with a photogenic golden glow as it set, and we danced and ate and drank the evening away with many of the people we love the most.

After a getaway to San Francisco (a personal cathedral of mine) we returned home to our friends in Los Angeles. We passed “Go”, this time with a shared monopoly piece.

Over cups of coffee and lunchtime salads and “I’m so glad we can do this again” beers, I’ve been asked how the married life is.

I answer this question the same way every time.

Marriage was always drawn up as this monumental thing. And if our personal investment in it is any indication, it is indeed important. But it doesn’t negate any other corner of life.

Work is still a rewarding and challenging and stressful wrestling match. Faith is still a long, long journey. Friendships are still as refreshing and meaningful and necessary as ever. Hobbies still captivate and bring joy to life. I will still champion moderation and balance as key attributes of a healthy lifestyle, even while being madly in love.

I will say though, in the dull moments, in the fun moments, and in the moments when life feels imbalanced, having someone in your corner for life is a great feeling.
