Fail Small, Not Big

“Instead of feeling that you’ve blown the day and thinking, ‘I’ll get back on track tomorrow,’ try thinking of each day as a set of four quarters: morning, midday, afternoon, evening. If you blow one quarter, you get back on track for the next quarter. Fail small, not big.”

–Gretchen Rubin

Today marks the start of 6 consecutive production days. A few tornado weeks of pre-production, and here we are.

I learned something interesting over the past few weeks as I explored this idea of quarters for myself. Usually, I can string together a very solid, productive full work day. But the constant demands of pre-production were making that difficult. My brain kept running out of gas after a few hour stretch, and I had to take a break.

It’s ok to change your routine to fit the demands of the day. I love my routine, but sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that if I can’t stick to my full routine, the whole day is shot. But I’m learning that even if I can get one or two solid quarters in the day, that’s often enough to meaningfully move the needle.

Good luck with your projects this week. I hope to learn even more throughout mine this week.
