Thoughts on Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul

Logan Paul, a notorious YouTuber and master of leveraging bad press, is set to fight arguably the greatest boxer of our generation, Floyd Mayweather.

Tens of thousands of professional boxers could only dream about having their name next to Floyd Mayweather’s on a fight card. While they were training in the ring, Logan Paul was making cheesy videos on Vine, selling merchandise, and growing his YouTube empire.

And now look who’s fighting Floyd Mayweather.

This fight seems a bit surreal. With a professional record of 50-0, Floyd Mayweather is one of the most accomplished professional athletes of all time. Logan Paul is just a YouTuber. He’s some guy who made a lot of vlogs. It seems like a true professional is battling an internet glitch. This might as well be Floyd Mayweather versus Donkey Kong. But this isn’t a simulation. Logan Paul isn’t “just a YouTuber.” He’s a media mogul with an incredible amount of leverage.

Even though I don’t follow boxing or Logan Paul, I do write about the digital landscape, and this is monumental. The truth is, digital creators leverage massive audiences with hard data on the amount of eyeballs they can draw.

Don’t be caught off guard when “a bunch of YouTubers” are winning fights, running major brands, hosting late night TV, and serving in public office. Because this is the new brand of influence.
