Left Brain Truths & Right Brain Truths

Would you rather take advice from a peer-reviewed study or a close friend?

Technically the peer-reviewed study is more accurate. It’s more scientific. It’s more likely to end up being true.

But the advice from a close friend somehow feels more true. They’re probably just extrapolating their own experiences onto yours, which is less scientific. But the fact that your friend knows you gives the advice more weight in your considerations.

I love reading research-based self-help books. And I also love reading memoirs. The left brain truth and the right brain truth both feel important to me. It’s tough for me to reconcile this in my writing sometimes. When my work feels too much like a close friend, I wonder if it’s true for my readers, too. But when my writing references too many studies, I wonder where the heart is.

I guess I’ll just keep walking the tightrope until I learn how to balance on it.

Thanks for reading, I hope you have a great week.
