When More Is Still Too Little

Just because it’s the most you’ve ever been paid doesn’t mean it’s not too little.

When great opportunities or big paychecks come across our desks, we can get a little wide-eyed. We see something we’ve never seen before, or something we’ve always dreamed about, and say “yes” too quickly. The mark of a smart professional is knowing how to say “no” to small opportunities when they’re too small. The mark of a smarter professional is knowing how to say “no” to big opportunities when they’re too small.

There’s nothing wrong with being excited about an opportunity, or taking a project just because it’s the biggest paycheck you’ve ever been offered. It’s still a win, as you’ll be getting paid more than you have before. But be careful with big opportunities, because they might still be too small. Speck them out as thoroughly as you do a small opportunities, and make sure they’re profitable on all ends.

Good luck out there.
