How To Get More Clients During COVID

I read an e-book recently by legendary copywriter, Ray Edwards, about how to get more creative copywriting clients. He says to send a text to 1-2 connections every day, asking to get on a call. If you’re reaching out to 2 people every weekday, that’s over 500 connections each year.

The magic in this system is doing it every day. When you need a new client to make rent, it’s already too late. Furiously texting all of your connects asking for business won’t yield any results (beyond making you look desperate). The odds are too low. Any single brand or company only has creative projects a few times each year. Even if you contacted 1000 brands at once, the likelihood that they all need your services for a project at that moment is next to none.

The key is staying touch often, keeping yourself top-of-mind for a few dozen connects consistently. Then, when their projects come up, and they need what you do, you’ll be a great choice.

I was recently talking to a director friend of mine who owns a creative studio. We were discussing how the classic agency “flex” model is on pause because of COVID. You can’t take a client to a basketball game, or a fancy restaurant, or invite them to your hip office anymore. Those strategies are on pause.

What strategy remains? Texting, calling, and bringing value.

Do it every day.

P.S. If you’re looking for some ideas to “wow” clients during this COVID era, here are a few: send them a book, send a handwritten note, bring them coffee and take a walk, curate some helpful videos and resources, or send a Postmates gift card to their email. Good luck out there.
