Great Service Is Good Marketing

My friend Jordan is the best freelancer I know. He’s organized, knowledgeable, confident, and fun to be around. And he knows how to do about one hundred things exceptionally well. When producing projects over the past three years, I’ve hired Jordan probably 40 times. But I’ve tried to hire him 100 times–he’s always busy. 

Being busy as a freelancer requires great marketing. But Jordan isn’t running ads, he’s not networking at parties every weekend, and he’s not publishing tutorial videos. So how is he doing it? 

He provides great service. 

Word of mouth has always been, and will always be, the most effective form of marketing. A recommendation from a trusted friend outweighs 1000 5-star reviews. 

So how do you get people to pass your name around?

You do a few extra things that aren’t in the contract. You create “wow” moments on purpose. You connect with clients and customers on a personal level. You add an extra perk in the product box. You process the refund with no questions asked. You wish clients a happy birthday. 

Great service is good marketing. There are freelancers and businesses who have more work coming their way than they could ever do in a year. And they haven’t posted an ad, published a blog, or done any part of the dance once. They just started small and provided great service every step of the way.
