Keeping Your Clients Happy - 1 of 2

Working with clients is a little bit like meeting your significant other’s parents. Of course you won’t lie about anything or pretend to be someone that you’re not. But you’ll probably be on your best behavior. You’ll choose the right things to share, and you’ll keep the wrong things unsaid. You’ll present things as positives and always be polite.

There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s simple relationship management in a high stakes relationship.

When I first started freelancing, I focused almost all my attention on the work, and very little of it on client management. In time, I was let go, and I was confused because I thought I was doing good work.

Later I realized that keeping clients happy is half of the work when we work with clients. Of course quality work and results are important, but if the client isn’t having a good time working with us, what’s the point?

It begins to make a lot more sense why big advertising firms buy the court-side tickets and the fancy dinners.

Tomorrow, I’ll share some tips on how I keep my clients happy, and how you can too.
